Get Ready for the 35th Annual James Barber 5K Walk/Run/Bike

The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Connecticut Chapter is holding its 35th Annual James Barber 5K Walk/Run/Bike on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Edgewood Park in New Haven, and it's an event you won't want to miss.

Event Details

Participants can walk, run, or bike along a nicely shaded route through the park, perfect for a September morning. The course is welcoming to all ages and abilities, whether you're a serious runner or just out for a family stroll.

A Legacy of Community Support

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the James Barber 5K, a New Haven tradition that has grown into one of the region's most meaningful community events. The walk, run, and bike help sustain the critical programs provided statewide at Michelle's House, the first sickle cell community center in the Northeast, located at 1389 Chapel Street in New Haven.

Last year, more than 400 walkers, runners, and bikers came together for the cause, and this year promises to be even bigger.

Sickle cell disease is a serious inherited blood disorder that affects roughly 100,000 people in the United States, causing agonizing pain and serious health complications. Events like the James Barber 5K are vital for raising awareness and funding the support services, advocacy, and programs that families in Connecticut rely on.
