Knickerbocker Golf Club

The Knickerbocker Golf Club, Inc. is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit amateur golf and social club and one of the oldest African-American golf clubs in the United States. Founded in 1944 in New Haven, Connecticut, the club was born out of necessity — when "a group of African Americans in New Haven… united to form the Knickerbocker Golf Club."

That founding came four years before Ted Rhodes competed in the U.S. Open and three years before Jackie Robinson's historic baseball debut — making Knickerbocker one of the earliest African-American golf clubs in the nation, established well before the broader civil-rights breakthroughs that would transform American sport.

The club was established by visionaries including Charles Dorsey, Shepherd Brock, and Alex Smith, who created a space where African-American golfers could compete, socialize, and build community during an era when most courses were closed to them.

Over the decades, Knickerbocker has hosted major national events, including the United Golfers Association (UGA) Championships in 1970 and 1977 — landmark tournaments in the history of African-American golf. The club held its 80th anniversary celebration in 2024 and has run its annual scholarship golf tournament continuously since its founding.

In the 1950s, the club joined the United Golfers Association — the Black golfers' circuit — and began hosting major Pro-Am events that drew talented players from across the country. But Knickerbocker's impact extended well beyond the fairway. Members actively wrote letters and advocated to desegregate golf events, pressuring country clubs and tournaments to admit Black players at a time when such access was routinely denied.

That commitment to equity and community didn't end with the civil-rights era. As the broader landscape of golf evolved, the club expanded its social role to support youth sports teams and scholarship programs — investing in the next generation and ensuring that Knickerbocker's mission of empowerment continued to reach beyond the game itself.

Throughout its more than eight decades, the Knickerbocker Golf Club has remained independently managed by its board and members — there is no record of any acquisition or merger. This independence is a point of pride: the club's destiny has always been in the hands of the people who love it most.

The club's legacy is deeply tied to New Haven's African-American heritage and the broader struggle to integrate golf in America. From its earliest days, Knickerbocker has been more than a golf club — it is a living testament to resilience, fellowship, and the belief that sport belongs to everyone.
